Beaumont is at the south end of the Big Thicket National Preserve. Some place Beaumont in the Piney Woods Region of Texas. Others in the Gulf Coast Region. Since Beaumont has been badly damaged by multiple hurricanes coming from the Gulf of Mexico, it seems the Gulf Coast is the Texas Region best suited for Beaumont. |

Beaumont was damaged by the Galveston Hurricane of 1900. Hurricane Ike, hitting Beaumont on September 13, 2008 was the most damaging hurricane to ever strike Beaumont. Beaumont, Texas has what is called a humid subtropical climate. Beaumont is the country seat of Jefferson County. The Golden Triangle of Beaumont, Port Arthur and Orange are one of the most polluted areas in the United States. The pollution culprits are the oil industry and chemical plants. |

The American Basketball Association's Southeast Texas Mavericks play basketball in Beaumont's Ford Arena. John Jay French Museum is a pioneer settlement house built in 1845, showing visitors what life was like for a well-off Texas family in 1845. This is the oldest house in Beaumont. At Gator Rescue you can get a look at "Big Al," reputed to be the biggest alligator in captivity in Texas. You can pet baby alligators and gawk at a pair of prehistoric looking alligator snapping turtles.
