SAN MARCOS TEXAS |
|||
San Marcos is one of the oldest continuously inhabited locations in North
America. In San Marcos Aquarena Springs flows from the Edwards Aquifer, the
water from Aquarena Springs, and other springs, becomes the San Marcos
River, with crystal clear water, that remains a constant 72°, flowing
through the heart of San Marcos.
Aquarena Springs became a amusement park in 1951, with Ralph the Swimming Pig, being very well known. Among the attractions was the 220 foot Sky Spiral you see in the photo. The amusement park was closed in 1996. The structures remain and now take on a ghost town quality. Texas State University converted Aquarena Springs into an environmental learning center. You can still go on glass bottom boat rides, and visit exhibits and an aquarium, free of charge. At Wonder World you will find an earthquake-formed cave, a result of some movement in the Balcones Fault which lies beneath a large area of Central Texas. The Tejas Observation Tower gives an overhead look at the fault line and San Marcos. |

The San Marcos River Walkway connects five city parks along the San Marcos River, the walkway in notable for its lush tropical-like vegetation of elephant ears and hyacinths. The Devil's Backbone is the
nickname for RM 12, northwest out of San Marcos, a windy road that wanders
across a raised edge that towers over Hill Country. Eventually you come to the
junction with RM 32. Continue north on 12 and you will soon be in Wimberley. |

To float the San Marcos River you can find boat rentals at T.G. Canoe Livery and Spencer Canoes. Both offer shuttle service to return you to your vehicle. WHERE TO STAY IN SAN MARCOS You will find many of the national motel and hotel chains in San Marcos. Due to the historic nature of San Marcus you have some interesting Bed & Breakfast type lodging options, such as Bella Vista Carriage House, Blair House, Crystal River Inn, Forget Me Not River Inn and Southwind Bed & Breakfast.
You will find most of the national chains, both of the fast food variety and the full service restaurant type. A Joe's Crab Shack sits next to the San Marcos River, with a waterfall. Palmer's Restaurant Bar & Courtyard is in a historic 1920s building. |
