HUNTSVILLE AREA MAP

 TEXAS REGIONS

PINEY WOODS

The population of Huntsville was 35,078 in the 2000 census. Huntsville is on I-45 about 70 miles north of Houston and 170 miles south of Dallas. In Huntsville you  can visit the Texas Prison Museum, where you can see "Old Sparky", the chair that electrocuted 361 prisoners between 1924 and 1964.

In the Big Thicket, east of Lake Livingston you'll find the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation, one of only two reservations in the state of Texas. The Alabama-Coushatta Indians have lived in this location for over 160 years. They played a significant role in Texas history, helping Sam Houston achieve independence for Texas from Mexico, some serving in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The Alabama-Coushatta now offer visitors overnight camping, with RV hookups, a museum, restaurant and craft shop.

If you look at the top of the map, on I-45 you'll see the town of Fairfield. Traveling south to Houston we discovered Sam's Original Restaurant & BBQ. Sam's has both an All-You-Can-Eat Buffet and a regular menu. One of the best buffets we've found in Texas.
