 Canton
is the county seat of Van Zandt County, about 60 miles east of Dallas, on
Interstate 20. At last count Canton had a population of 3,292.
The population of Canton soars on the Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday
before the first Monday of each month, due to First
Monday Trade Days, with more than 300,000 arriving in Canton for a First
Monday weekend. Canton's First Monday Trade Days is the biggest flea market in
the world.
First Monday
Trade Days, is not the only event to take place in Canton. The Van
Zandt County Fair and Rodeo takes place in April. In August the annual Free
State Bluegrass & Classic Country Music Festival is held in the Canton
Civic Center.
Canton has the water park in East Texas, with Splash
Kingdom Family Waterpark.
James S. Hogg was the Canton District Attorney before he became the governor
of Texas in 1890, becoming well known for naming his daughter Ima.
Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow stayed briefly in Canton during their notorious
crime spree. The bank robbers did not rob any Canton bank.

WHERE TO EAT IN CANTON
You will find several fast food chains in Canton, Whataburger,
Burger King, Taco Bell, Dairy Queen, Subway, Sonic Drive-In, Pizza Hut and
Church's Chicken.
There are several non-chain local restaurants in Canton, including Sisters Old
Mill Creek Cafe, Susies Tea Room On The Square and Two Senoritas. You will find
a lot of Mexican restaurants in Canton. One is Robles' Mexican Restaurant. Many
locals think Jewel's Restaurant has the best Mexican food in the Canton area.
Ranchero Restaurant is another Mexican food option, along with Parrila Tacos and
Ochoa's Cafe and Fajitas Tacos and Juanita's Mexican Restaurant and Miss Susie's
Mexican Restaurant.
At Meatheads
on the Mountain you can have all the catfish you can eat.
Savannah Winery &
Bistro is located on the First Monday Trade Day Grounds, where you can get
burgers, salads, steaks, chicken, meatloaf, pork chops, shrimp, cheese platters
and other goodies to go with your wine.
For a local burger joint that gets good reviews go to Dairy
Palace Restaurant. Val's Italian Restaurant is the best Italian restaurant
in Canton. It is also the only Italian Restaurant in town.
You can probably guess what is on the menu at Backwoods Bar-B-Que. You will find
more barbecue at Rod's
Barbecue Shack. At Baker's
Ribs you will find some down home Texas-Style Barbecue.
There are buffets in Canton. The Panda Chinese Buffet is one.
Chen's Buffet is another Chinese Buffet. Rick's Fish & More Buffet is not a
Chinese Buffet. Papadales
Grill & Cantina has Texas Style Bar-Que in Buffet mode.
