POTEET TEXAS |
|||
Poteet
is named after Francis Marion Poteet. Poteet was Poteet's first postmaster. The
Poteet Post Office opened in 1886. By 1892 had the basic businesses that made up
a small town of that era, a gin, gristmill, wagonmaker and general store. Henry Mumme took over as Postmaster and in 1902 discovered Artesian Wells in the area, which led to irrigation, which led to strawberry fields. Which led to Poteet becoming the Strawberry Capital of Texas and the home of the Poteet Strawberry Festival. Poteet is also the hometown of country music singer, George Strait and Poteet Canyon, a character in the Steve Canyon comic strip. At last count the population of Poteet was 3,305. |

First held in 1948, the Poteet Strawberry Festival is one of the
oldest festivals in Texas. The festival is known throughout the Southwest as
being one of the best. The Poteet Strawberry Festival grounds covers over 100 acres with 14 entertainment areas. |
