The water level of the polder land was kept low by 'watermolen'
(windmills). This watermolen near Noord Sharwoude pumped water from the
canals which surrounded the small islands behind the molen, into the
large canal in front of the molen. Other watermolen were used to power
mills to grind grain or saw wood.
